LORD, WHERE'S YOUR GLORY?
LORD, WHERE’S YOUR GLORY?

Then Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” Exo 33:18 ISV
Brethren, today I want to begin sharing God’s word with a question that has likely crossed each of our minds at one point or another – “Lord, where is your glory?”
We all desire to witness the power and majesty of God made manifest. Throughout scripture and history we have heard tales of the Lord’s miraculous works – the sick healed by a word, the oppressed set free, food multiplied to feed the hungry. In our most difficult moments, when troubles seem to overwhelm and hope feels distant, it is then that we long to see proof of God’s glory made real.
The book of Exodus tells of such a time. God had instructed Moses to lead his people to the Promised Land, but declared that he would not go with them, for the Israelites had sinned greatly in worshiping a golden calf. Moses pleaded with the Lord, saying “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” For how could Moses lead without the glory and strength of God?
It was then that Moses asked for an even greater sign – “Show me your glory.” Such a request reveals the depths of Moses’ faith and longing for God. In our lowest valleys, when darkness seems all-consuming, it is then that we too cry out “Lord, where is your glory? Show us a sign that you are with us still!”
To see the glory of God is one of the most difficult things one could ever ask of Him. Just as Elisha asked the Lord for a double portion of Elijah’s power, seeing God’s face is not possible for humans to behold and live. However, the Lord granted Moses’ bold request by allowing him to see His glory, though not His face directly.
Some of us at times belittle God or fail to fully trust in His abilities. When challenges come our way, we question “Can God truly do this for me?” But we must remember, nothing is too hard for God. Just as Moses asked for something so difficult, having the courage to see the Lord’s glory, God granted his request.
Do you recall the story of Eli and his household? Eli was severely warned by God to instruct his sons Phinehas and Hophni to walk righteously, but they continued in sin and disrespect of sacred things. As a result of their waywardness, they fell in battle against the Philistines. Upon hearing the tragic news, Eli himself died of grief. His daughter-in-law, in labor with her son, named the child Ichabod – meaning “the glory of God has departed.”
Have we seen through this account that household sin can cause God’s glory to depart? I pose the question to you today – where in your own life has God’s glory been lacking? Do you desire to see His glory manifest in you once more? If so, I encourage you to ask the Lord boldly as Moses did, and fully trust in Him.
It is my prayer that each of you will experience God’s glory returning to you in a fresh new way, through the power and salvation found only in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May His glory shine in you and through you to bring others to know His great love. Amen.
Prayers
- Lord, God of all glory, you who dwell in unapproachable light, reveal yourself to your people. Where is your glory that we long to see? Lift the veil from our eyes that we may behold your majestic splendor. Let your face shine upon us with grace and mercy, that the radiance of your holiness may transform our lives.
2. Righteous Father, pour out your Spirit upon your sons and daughters. Ignite our hearts with passion for your presence, that we would seek you with our whole being. Refine us by your glory until we reflect your image. May the glory that filled Moses on the mountain also rest upon us, that the world may see Christ living in us.
3. Mighty God of Jacob, tear open the heavens and come down! We lift our voices together in one accord, crying out for a glimpse of your power and love. Do not hide your face from us any longer but reveal your glory in our midst. Break through every veil of darkness, shatter every idol that keeps us from knowing you fully. Let this generation encounter you and be forever changed.
4. Holy One, we long to see your glory! Where is the light that guided your people of old? Arise, shine your light, and illumine our paths. Fill this temple with your radiance so all who enter may worship in awe and wonder at your presence. Do great and mighty things that point souls to your saving name. Let your glory be seen in us, O Lord, according to your promise.
5. Faithful God, hear our prayers. You have said that none can see your face and live, yet we ask boldly for your glory to be revealed. By your grace alone, answer us for your glory’s sake. Come and transform our lives by your power and love. May all who look upon us see not ourselves but only Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
